Pawling:

On Tuesday evening, August 4, the Democratic Party of Pawling showed that they are alive and active in the Village of Pawling. The two party system in Pawling now allows the citizens of Pawling a free choice in the elections in November in the Village of Pawling.

A standing room only crowd of over 50 people attended the caucus chaired by Janet Couch.  Colette Zito, Burr Hubbell and Carmen Carrozza were unanimously nominated as candidates on the Democratic line for the November election.

Collete Zito currently serves as a Village Trustee. She was nominated for Village Mayor and spoke with experience on many of the issues.  She stated: “As your mayor, I will foster new, progressive initiatives to best serve Pawling in the coming years."

Carmen Carrozza and Burr Hubbell were nominated for the two open Trustee positions.

Carmen, an SVP in financial services for over 25 years, is a father of four and now runs his own business.  Carmen spoke earnestly about the importance of pro-active government and continuous communication.  He feels all residents need to have a voice and deserve responsive leadership.  “Every member of our community should feel valued and receive value from their government,” Carmen explained.

Burr, a former attorney and construction supervisor, told the audience that shared municipal services were a way to ease the high property tax burden in Pawling.  He also spoke about his concern over the recent spate of drug and alcohol related incidents affecting the youth of Pawling and the need for a Village government that is fair and open to all.

Call for Change say Democratic Candidates for Pawling

For Immediate Release                                  Elizabeth Soto

August 11, 2009                                            beansoto@gmail.com

Candidates:  Robert J. Hill, Town Supervisor

Jeffrey A. Asher, Town Councilman

Mario Merjorado Jr., Town Councilman

Bob Brill, Pawling Highway Superintendent

Jeffrey Asher has recently retired from Consumer Reports after more than 20 years serving the consumer.  In his position as Technical Director, he led the testing of all consumer product, including cars.

Asher brings critical skills to his Town Board candidacy as a result of his career and public service while a resident of Pawling over these last 22 years.  He has proven leadership skills in his management of large groups of people and projects.

Asher said, “he got into the race for Councilman when he saw how much rancor their is within the current Town Board.  This is making it impossible for the Councilmen and Supervisor to work together.” Specifically, Jeff is “concerned about a major budget shortfall that is not being responded to.”  Jeff also indicated that another of his priorities “is to create and implement a vision for utilizing Pawling’s unique parkland areas.”

Mario Mejorado, Jr. officially announced his plans to run for a seat on Pawling’s Town Board on August 8, 2009.

“Having been raised and educated in Pawling, and now raising my own family here, I have always planned on giving back to the Town that has given me so much,” said Mejorado. “Now is that time.”

Mejorado, an endorsed candidate on the Democratic ticket, is running on a platform which includes improving parks and roads with state and federal funds, streamlining municipal services to reduce taxpayer costs, enhancing recreation programs with existing resources and making Pawling’s government more transparent. If elected, Mejorado wants to work on preparing the Pawling community for the future and placing Pawling’s town government on the right track.

Mejorado welcomes Pawling residents to www.mariomejorado.com, to learn more about his candidacy.

Robert "Bob" Brill has been a resident of Pawling for over 25 years and is running for Pawling Highway Superintendent.  He is a graduate of Pawling High School as well as Dutchess County BOCES with a certificate in Auto Body.  He has broad knowledge of excavation, drainage, and road improvements since he has been born and raised in the excavation business.  An experienced leader managing a 20 man crew, he has also served as District Chief, Deputy Chief and Captain of the Pawling Volunteer Fire Dept.  Bob has a wealth of knowledge gained through hands on experience of owning a Snow Removal, Excavation, Paving and Landscaping Business.  While owning a business he has also gained the skills in preparing project plans, sticking to a budget, maintaining inventories and cost effective purchasing.  Bob is a staunch advocate of getting back to basics.  Using what equipment and assets we have to make improvements now without putting a great burden on tax payers.  He has an unparalleled desire give Pawling a business sense, not business as usual.

What do YOU want to know
about your government?

Did you ever look at the news about your government and want to know what was beneath the surface of the headlines?  Were you ever unsatisfied with the response of a government official and wish you were better informed on a topic, so you could ask the best questions of that official? Have you ever wanted to do investigative research the way the big boys do it?

If you’ve learned anything about inner government workings that politicians wish you didn’t know, you got it by one of two basic ways: 1. “Deep Throat” whispered secrets to you in an underground garage, or 2. someone forced the government to release documents by use of a “Freedom of Information Law” (F.O.I.L.)  request.

Use of the F.O.I.L., frequently and publicly, will keep our government open, while publication of the findings will arm the citizenry with the political ammunition required to make our government work for us.

However, most people have no idea of how to begin. A good place to start is through the website accessed here.  Provided by New York State, this website furnishes an explanation of F.O.I.L. as well as the who, where, and how to of the process.  You provide the what and why.

There are no bad F.O.I.L. requests.  Hopefully, you’ll get the answers you want in a timely matter.  If you don’t, that alone may be cause for more questions.

We’ll keep a link to this info in the ‘Links’ section in the right hand column of this page.  Be sure to acquaint yourself with this information. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and share what you learn. Help keep your government open.
